India-China Talks: PM Modi on Border Peace, But Experts Warn of 'Temporary' Calm | India Today News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s opening comments at a bilateral meeting highlighted ‘Vishwas, Samman and Samvedan Shilta’ (trust, respect and sensitivity). The discussion builds on talks from Kazan, focusing on maintaining peace at the border through engagement by special representatives. Proposed measures include direct flights and scaling up the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. While disengagement at friction points is complete, the critical step of de-escalation remains a priority. India’s stated prerequisite for progress is "peace and tranquility at the borders." However, analysts note the current peace may be temporary and are looking for substantive, long-term solutions and concessions from China, such as support for India’s NSG entry, beyond just ‘soft measures’. The dialogue also explores people-to-people cooperation amidst concerns about China’s strategic use of cultural initiatives.
