India Challenges Western Credit Rating Agencies, Launches Responsible Nation Index
For decades, credit rating agencies shaped the fate of countries, especially in the developing world. During India’s early years of economic liberalisation, ratings like AAA or junk status determined access to global capital and investor confidence. India and many Global South nations had little control over these Western-dominated systems.
Now, India is pushing back with the Responsible Nations Index (RNI). The RNI aims to judge countries on responsibility, not power or influence. It is built on three pillars: internal responsibility, environmental responsibility, and external responsibility. The index will assess 154 countries using transparent global data, focusing on ethics, cooperation, humanitarian work, and sustainability. India says traditional ratings ignored factors like vaccine diplomacy and disaster relief. With growing concerns over bias in global ratings, the RNI represents an attempt by the Global South to offer an alternative lens and assert greater sovereignty in how nations are evaluated.
