India Calls For Preserving ‘Unity, Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity’ Of Syria After Assad’s Ouster
upheaval. In an unprecedented turn of events, President Al-Assad’s over 50-year-old regime was brought down by the rebel forces. The rebel groups on Dec 08 took over the Syrian capital Damascus after President Al-Assad fled to Russia. Meanwhile, India is closely monitoring the developments in Damascus issuing its statement over the turmoil. The Indian embassy in Damascus is also “in contact with the Indian community, for their safety and security”. Earlier, US President Joe Biden also hailed the fall of al-Assad’s regime calling it a “fundamental act of justice”. UN also urged the Syrian people to seize the "historic opportunity" for a stable and peaceful future. Meanwhile, President Assad and his family are at the mercy of Russia, according to Russian news agencies. Russia has granted them asylum on humanitarian grounds, Russian news agencies cited a Kremlin source. Russia maintains 2 key military bases in Syria, has been a strong ally of Assad and intervened in the country’s 13-year civil war.
