The opposition’s candidate for the vice-presidential elections, Justice Sudarshan Reddy, filed his nomination papers in Parliament. The event was marked by a show of strength, with a march from Mr. Kargay’s office led by prominent leaders including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Sharad Pawar. Sonia Gandhi was the principal person nominating Mr. Reddy, with support from 140 other MPs. Though the numbers are seen to favour the NDA, the opposition is framing this as an "ideological battle". The sentiment among opposition leaders was reported as, "we understand we don’t have the numbers, but we will not let this go. We will go down fighting." The nomination requires the signatures of at least 20 electors as proposers and 20 as seconders. The election is scheduled for 9th September, with the papers being filed at the office of Rajya Sabha Secretary General P.C. Modi, the returning officer for the polls.
