India has officially begun its long-delayed population census, marking the first nationwide headcount since 2011 and the largest demographic exercise in the world. The census, originally scheduled for 2021, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and logistical challenges.
The new census will be conducted in two phases, starting with houselisting and housing data collection, followed by detailed population enumeration through 2027. For the first time, India is using digital tools and online self-enumeration, making this the country’s first fully digital census.
