A temple town in Karnataka, Dharmasthala, is the center of an investigation into alleged mass burials. A former sanitation worker has claimed he was forced to bury more than 100 bodies between 1995 and 2014, many allegedly victims of sexual assault and murder. In a statement, the whistleblower said, "I can no longer carry the pain, threats and guilt from the murders I witnessed and the bodies I was forced to bury." Following his complaint on July 4, the Karnataka government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) which has begun exhuming sites identified by him.
