Lava flow from an active volcano again engulfed a road to the coastal town of Grindavik. Volcanic activity: Officials will assess the need to shut the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Drone footage captured on the Reykjanes Peninsula showed the steadily advancing flow. Pertinent to note, the Iceland volcano had stabilised since a May 29 eruption. May 29 marked the most powerful eruption since it reawakened in December after 800 years. Authorities: Lava flow advancing significantly slower than during the previous 2 eruptions. The same section of road was previously engulfed in February and March this year. Grindavik was not subject to an evacuation order as it was not deemed at imminent risk. Residents of Grindavik can still enter the coastal town via routes from east & west. Grindavik is about 50 kilometers (30 miles) southwest of Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik. A swarm of November quakes forced an evacuation ahead of the initial December 18 eruption. The area is part of the Svartsengi volcanic system that was dormant for nearly 800 years. The volcano erupted again in December, January, February and March. The February 8 eruption engulfed a pipeline, cutting off heat & hot water to thousands. Iceland, which sits above a volcanic hot spot in North Atlantic, sees regular eruptions. The most disruptive in recent times was the 2010 eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano. The 2010 eruption spewed clouds of ash into the atmosphere & led to airspace closures.
