The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has raised serious concerns about potential nuclear risks in Iran, with its chief, Rafael Grossi, stating that efforts to contact Iranian nuclear regulatory authorities continue without response. Grossi warned that the agency ‘cannot rule out the possibility of a possible radiological release with serious consequences,’ including evacuations ‘as large or larger than major cities.’ The IAEA has urged ‘utmost restraint in all military operations’ near nuclear facilities and emphasized the need to re-establish communication channels with Iranian authorities. The agency has been monitoring Iran’s nuclear facilities since attacks occurred, with concerns that any damage could impact not only Iran but neighbouring nations including Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and the UAE. The IAEA chief stressed the importance of dialogue and caution as the conflict escalates.
