The remnants of Hurricane Beryl have wreaked havoc on Vermont, dumping heavy rain that caused catastrophic flooding, washing away an apartment building, knocking out bridges, and cutting off towns. This deluge comes exactly one year after the state experienced similar catastrophic flooding, retraumatizing a community still in recovery.
The heavy rainfall, which began on Wednesday and persisted into Thursday, resulted in more than 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain in parts of Vermont, with the heaviest impact in areas that were hard hit a year ago.
The National Weather Service in Burlington reported extensive damage, and rescue operations continued late into the night, with some communities under evacuation orders. Roads were flooded, washed out, or covered with debris, and at least one person has died as a result of the flooding.
