Suhas Yathiraj, the Indian para-badminton player who won a silver medal at the Paralympics 2024, has had quite the journey to the top. So what is his secret to success? It stemmed from talent, but also a mentality that ensured he would keep trying and trying and until he succeeded – as he shared eloquently in the form of a ‘sher’. While not his own poem, he said it inspired him and hoped it would inspire others too.
By his own admission, he only took to the sport of badminton late in life – which makes his medal winning exploits at the top of the sporting world even more remarkable. But there is so much more to the man, as he talked about in great detail in a chat with the Republic SportFit podcast.
In the podcast, Suhas spoke about how his journey to the top of the badminton world started late as well as how it is he juggles his love for sport with his other passion – serving people in his job as an IAS officer. Interestingly, he is the only IAS officer in India to win a Paralympic medal and an Arjuna Award, but he doesn’t see juggling his sporting and professional life as an issue.
He does also shed plenty of light not only on his own sport, but also how it is that Indian Paralympians are doing much better now – something that he credits to the multiple schemes like TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) being used in the right way.
