In the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam tragedy, India has suspended the Indus Water Treaty. The 1960 treaty dictates the terms of a watersharing agreement between India and Pakistan.
For Pakistan, the treaty and the agreement it upholds are vital as around 80% of the nation’s agricultural needs are met by water drawn from the rivers, making up the Indus system.
Notwithstanding debates over whether India can block Pakistan’s access to the Indus in the near future, it is important to emphasise how poorly Pakistan is positioned to handle this crisis.
