Iran was the second Muslim-majority country to recognize Israel in 1948 under Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Both nations allied against common threats including Egypt’s Nasser and Soviet influence. Iran supplied oil to Israel via the Eilat-Ashkelon pipeline while Israeli firms built infrastructure in Iran. The 1979 Islamic Revolution under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini severed all ties with Israel. Tehran branded Israel the ‘little Satan’ and the embassy became a Palestinian Liberation Organisation outpost. Iran funded Hezbollah’s formation in 1982 and backed Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Israel responded with covert operations including assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists and the Stuxnet cyber attack. By 2024, direct confrontations intensified with Israel hitting Iran’s Damascus consulate and Iran launching missile barrages. In June 2025, Israel launched Operation Rising Line targeting Iranian nuclear and military sites, sparking a 12-day war.
