A massive fire swept through a high-rise residential complex in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district, killing at least 44 people and leaving hundreds unaccounted for. The blaze started on Wednesday afternoon on bamboo scaffolding at the Wang Fuk Court estate, which was under major renovation, and quickly spread to several of the eight interconnected buildings housing approximately 2,000 apartment units. Firefighters struggled through hazardous conditions marked by intense heat and falling debris to rescue residents, but many remain missing.
Authorities confirmed three arrests on manslaughter charges in connection with the fire, but details about the suspects’ alleged roles were not disclosed. The fire department initially reported 36 deaths, which rose to 44 in a follow-up briefing. Hundreds were evacuated, while dozens were hospitalized, some in serious condition. The fire has been classified as a level 5 alarm, the highest severity, triggering a large-scale emergency response including dozens of fire engines and ambulances.
This tragic event is the deadliest fire in the city’s recent decades, raising urgent questions about fire safety during renovations and the use of flammable materials on building exteriors. Hong Kong officials and China’s central government have expressed condolences and are prioritizing investigations and support for victims and their families.
