Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has reacted sharply to the resignation of senior leader Bhupen Borah from the Congress party, describing him as the ‘last Hindu leader’ in the state unit who rose from a ‘normal family’ without a political lineage. Sarma alleged that Borah’s exit sends a symbolic message that common citizens cannot prosper within the Congress, which he accused of practicing ‘appeasement politics’ to please specific communities. The Chief Minister further claimed that the situation within the Assam Congress is ‘grim,’ with district offices allegedly holding meetings that begin with religious prayers of a particular community. He also highlighted Borah’s concerns regarding Gaurav Gogoi’s stance on a Pakistan visit. While welcoming the resignation, Sarma noted that Borah had not yet contacted the BJP for joining but mentioned that the party had been open to welcoming him for years. The development comes amid reports of an exodus from the Congress toward the BJP ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
