Senior journalist and West Asia observer Wael Awad spoke to India Today about the rise of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.
Awad said the new leader could take a tougher stance in the region and described him as “more than a hawk.” According to Awad, a sympathy wave and strong support from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, clerics, and government officials helped Mujtaba Khamenei come to power.
He also noted that Mujtaba had been working closely with his father Ali Khamenei for years and understands Iran’s political and military system well.
Awad further discussed Iran’s regional network, including groups like Hezbollah, saying they mainly focus on defending their own territories rather than acting only as Iranian proxies.
