Head of Russia’s Nuclear Defense Forces, Igor Kirillov, Killed In Explosion At Moscow
Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence Forces, was killed in a bomb attack in Moscow. The explosive device, concealed within an electric scooter near a residential apartment block, was remotely triggered, killing Kirillov and his assistant, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee.
Russian investigators have launched a probe into the attack, with forensic experts and operational services working at the scene to determine the circumstances behind the crime.
The incident has garnered international attention due to Kirillov’s controversial role in Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) recently accused him of deploying banned chemical weapons during the ongoing conflict, citing over 4,800 uses of such weapons, including K-1 combat grenades. These allegations were echoed by the U.S. State Department, which documented the use of chloropicrin—a chemical agent first deployed in World War I—against Ukrainian troops.
Kirillov, who led Russia’s nuclear defense forces since 2017, was under international sanctions by countries like the U.K. and Canada for his involvement in Ukraine. His death, amidst rising geopolitical tensions, has raised questions about the security of high-ranking officials and potential links to the ongoing conflict.
This attack comes at a time of heightened scrutiny over Russia’s military activities and adds another layer of complexity to the escalating crisis in Eastern Europe.
