Incessant heavy rains have caused severe disruption on the Mandi-Manali highway. The route is blocked due to heavy landslides in the Dwada area, which brought down boulders and badly damaged the road surface. Traffic towards Manali has been completely halted. The situation was worsened by the overflowing Beas river, which breached its banks and flooded the highway. Vehicles, including trucks and cars, are queued up, waiting for the highway to be restored. Bridges in the larger Kullu and Manali area have also been reported as washed away. Although there is currently no rain, which is described as a “big relief,” the scale of the devastation suggests that recovery and the resumption of normal traffic will take a significant amount of time. Hopes are that rescue and restoration operations will now accelerate.
