A stampede at the Mansa Devi temple in Haridwar has resulted in the deaths of at least six people, with several others injured. The injured have been shifted to a local hospital. Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat called the incident a ‘serious matter’ that requires a ‘deeper probe’. He noted that the number of pilgrims has increased significantly over the years and questioned if the management failed to anticipate the crowd. He said, ‘somewhere, either the amount that goes first, the amount has increased a lot and we do not anticipate it, the management is not able to arrange it that way.’ The incident occurred during the holy month of Sawan, a time that typically sees a heavy rush of devotees.
