GST Council Meets: Major Rate Cuts On Daily-Use Items Expected From September 5 | India Today News

The 56th GST Council meeting is underway in New Delhi, chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, with state finance ministers also in attendance. The agenda focuses on significant GST reforms, rate rationalisation, and simplifying compliance. Contrary to earlier speculation that changes would be timed with the Navratri period, new information suggests reduced GST rates could be implemented as soon as midnight on September 5. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day promise of "next generation of GST reforms" aimed at providing relief for the common man, farmers, MSMEs, and the middle class. A major point of discussion is the potential reduction of GST on many FMCG items, such as toothpaste and shampoo, from 18% down to 5%, signalling significant changes for consumers. The government’s stated aim is to build an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ through a simpler, more transparent tax system.
