New GST 2.0 rates have come into effect today, September 22. The revised tax structure is aimed at making essential goods more affordable while increasing the cost of luxury items. In a national address, Prime Minister Modi termed the rollout the beginning of a "GST Bachat Utsav" or savings festival, coinciding with the start of Navratri. He stated the reforms will benefit the poor, the middle class, and a rising new middle class. The Prime Minister also gave the mantra to be "Proudly Swadeshi," urging citizens to buy ‘Made in India’ products to strengthen the nation’s economy under the ‘Atma Nirbhar Bharat’ mission. He said, "Just as the freedom of the country received strength from the mantra of Swadeshi… similarly, the prosperity of the country will also receive strength from the mantra of Swadeshi." The reforms are expected to provide a boost to the economy.
