GST 2.0: A Diwali Gift To Counter Trump's Tariffs or A Pre-Election Gamble?

A major overhaul of the Goods and Services Tax, termed GST 2.0, has been initiated, which the government is calling a significant ‘Diwali bonus’ for consumers and the economy. The reforms aim to boost consumption, revive private investment, and partially offset the impact of US tariffs. The changes include a reduction in GST for the renewable energy sector from 12% to 5%. While some business leaders view it as a "game-changing move" to stimulate growth, there are concerns about its timing and actual fiscal implications. One former finance ministry official offered a contrasting view on the financial impact, stating, "In my judgment, the loss or the fiscal implication is about two lakh crore, not 48,000 crore." The debate also covers whether these measures will genuinely improve the ease of doing business, address the compliance burdens faced by MSMEs, and resolve issues like the ‘Inspector Raj’ through the newly operationalised GST appellate tribunal. #gst #gstreforms #indianeconomy #itwebvideos #trumptariffs #makeinindia #businessnews #economicpolicy #msme #diwalibonus #taxcuts #investment #indiatoday #gstcouncil #easeofdoingbusiness #economy
