A severe LPG cylinder shortage is forcing iconic eateries across India to switch from gas to coal stoves. In Lucknow, the famous Tunday Kababi in Aminabad has been compelled to use coal for cooking their renowned galouti kebabs due to unavailability of commercial LPG cylinders. The owner stated that they have returned to old methods as cylinders are not available. Similarly, Sharma Chaiwala, another iconic establishment in Lucknow, is now preparing samosas on coal stoves instead of gas. The owner mentioned that while gas was easier and required fewer workers, the cylinder shortage has forced them back to traditional coal-burning methods. Mumbai’s food outlets near CST railway station have also switched to coal, with owners describing the situation as worse than the Corona period. The crisis comes ahead of Eid, threatening Lucknow’s vibrant food culture. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a protest rally in Kolkata against LPG scarcity, while in Rajya Sabha, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge alleged a mega LPG crisis affecting households and restaurants nationwide.
