Govt Companies Can Increase Production 10 Times In India's Mining Sector: Anil Agarwal | India Today

In a candid interview at India Today Conclave 2025, Anil Agarwal, founder of the Vedanta Group, called for sweeping reforms in India’s mining and energy sectors. Highlighting India’s massive import dependence, he said, ‘More than 90% of our oil is imported, more than 95% of copper is imported, almost 100% of gold is imported.’ Agarwal argued that government companies like ONGC, NTPC, and Hindustan Zinc have the capability to increase production ’10 to 20 times’ if given the right environment. He advocated for self-certification, reduced regulatory interference, and opening up the coal sector, dismissing pollution concerns as a ‘mindset’ issue planted in people’s minds. Agarwal emphasized that India possesses ‘sufficient’ reserves of gold, hydrocarbon, copper, bauxite, and uranium, and urged the government to trust Indian entrepreneurs. He also revealed that despite living abroad for 25-30 years as a ‘first-class taxpayer,’ he faces no notices, contrasting this with India’s bureaucratic hurdles.
