In the village of Rathu Singh Namavada in Gujarat’s Mahisagar district, a school teacher is fostering a chess movement. The mathematics teacher at the local government school is using his own funds to train students to become future grandmasters. ‘Jo meri salary hai uska mera niyam hai ki main uska chhota sa percent apne bacchon ke liye nikalu,’ he states, explaining his rule of setting aside a part of his salary for the children. He has purchased 125 chess sets, 35 timers, and chess books, and even translated a book into Gujarati. To ensure regular studies are not affected, he holds chess classes on Sundays and during holidays.
