A ghost island emerged in the Caspian Sea in early 2023 after the underwater Kumani Bank mud volcano erupted off Azerbaijan’s coast, releasing superheated mud, water, and gases. Measuring about 1,300 feet across at its peak, the island quickly eroded and vanished by late 2024, as captured by NASA’s Earth Observatory. Such short-lived landmasses are common in mud volcano regions, where loose sediments succumb to waves soon after eruptions. Azerbaijan, home to over 300 mud volcanoes, often witnesses these rare geological events, offering scientists valuable insights into tectonic and geothermal processes beneath the seabed.
