Gaurav Gogoi: “I Have No Confidence In Speaker Om Birla” | Opposition Moves Motion In Lok Sabha

Opposition members in the Lok Sabha have moved a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla, alleging constitutional violations and bias in the functioning of the House. The motion highlights the absence of a Deputy Speaker despite nearly 200 Opposition India Alliance members. It accuses the Speaker of repeatedly disallowing the Leader of the Opposition and other opposition leaders from speaking, with the microphone being used as a tool to silence dissent. During the motion of thanks to the President’s address in February, the Leader of the Opposition was reportedly interrupted 20 times by senior treasury bench members including the Defence Minister, Home Minister, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister. Opposition members emphasised that the motion is not a personal attack on Om Birla but aims to protect the dignity of Parliament and constitutional norms. They cited historical precedents from 1954, 1966, and 1987 when similar motions were moved. The opposition stated they are compelled to bring this resolution to uphold parliamentary decorum and democratic values.
