On Monday, June 16, world leaders are gathering in the picturesque Canadian mountain town of Kananaskis for the 51st edition of the Group of 7 meeting. First held in 1975, the G7 conference is a gathering of the world’s seven largest economies. At its core, the G7 is an informal body for these major economies to reach consensus and coordinate on (primarily) economic policy issues. But the G7, more broadly, also deals with a range of geopolitical issues, from climate change to the emergence of artificial intelligence, ongoing wars and much more. This year’s summit will focus on many of the traditional mainstays of the G7, with buzzwords like energy security and digital transition are being thrown around. But, as may be expected, current geopolitical issues are expected to cast a long shadow on the summit.
