Panic buying of fuel has sparked chaos across Indian cities including Hyderabad, Nagpur, Prayagraj, Lucknow and Jalna, despite official assurances of adequate supply. Long queues at petrol pumps have been triggered by social media rumours, forcing authorities to impose strict limits in some areas. In Maharashtra’s Jalna, restrictions include 200 rupees for two-wheelers, 2000 rupees for cars and a complete ban on fuel in containers. The chaos has led to traffic disruptions, with fuel queues spilling onto roads in Nagpur and midnight queues reported in Uttar Pradesh. In a unusual incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Devas, a bank employee rode a horse to work to avoid the fuel queues. The prime minister has called a meeting of all chief ministers virtually to address the situation. Opposition parties have criticised the centre for fuelling panic and failing to ensure adequate preparedness. Officials maintain there is no fuel shortage and have urged citizens not to let fear create disruption.
