This report covers the directive from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to all states and Union Territories for the immediate removal of non-compliant beverages sold with the ‘ORS’ label. The order targets fruit-based beverages, electrolyte drinks, and other ready-to-serve drinks that do not meet the WHO-recommended formula for Oral Rehydration Salts and are available on e-commerce platforms and in retail outlets. A speaker in the bulletin stated, ‘I request the government of India to make stringent law wherein only WHO recommended formula ORS will be available in the pharmacies.’ The FSSAI has instructed authorities to conduct inspection drives and take strict action against non-compliant business operators. This follows a Delhi High Court decision which, after an initial stay, declined to grant further time for companies to sell existing stock, citing health risks.
