Nepal has a new prime minister, Balendra Shah, a 35-year-old structural engineer from Kathmandu who rose from underground rap battles to the country’s highest office. Before dismantling Nepal’s political elite, Shah was performing in rap battles on YouTube in 2013, penning lyrics about deep-rooted inequality and systemic corruption. His tracks spoke about broken roads, locked-out youth, and a system that worked only for the few. In 2022, he entered the Kathmandu mayoral race as an independent candidate with no party backing, winning 38.6 percent of votes to become the first independent to hold office. As mayor, he demolished illegally constructed structures, cracked down on squatter settlements, and even stopped garbage collection at the Prime Minister’s office to make a point about accountability. He contested from KP Sharma Oli’s own constituency, a seat Oli had held since 2008, securing 68,348 votes, the highest individual vote tally in Nepal’s parliamentary election history, surpassing Oli’s previous record of 57,139 votes in 2017.
