France: French PM Lecornu Suspends Macron’s Flagship Pension Reform | GRAVITAS
France’s reappointed Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has announced a suspension of the country’s controversial 2023 pension reform, the very law that sparked months of nationwide strikes and protests.
Lecornu pledged no increase in the legal retirement age before January 2028, a pause on contribution changes, and a national conference on pensions to rebuild trust before the 2027 presidential election.
He also promised no more use of Article 49.3, which had allowed the reform to pass without a vote, calling it “a true rupture” in France’s politics.
The pause will cost €1.8 billion by 2027 but, Lecornu insists, “Suspending is not renouncing.”
Can this move calm France’s political storm — or is it just a temporary truce?
