Researchers have unearthed fossils of a now-extinct penguin species, Kumimanu fordycei, in New Zealand. Weighing between 154 to 159 kilograms, these penguins inhabited the region approximately 57 million years ago, shortly after the extinction of dinosaurs. The findings, published in the Journal of Paleontology, highlight the significant size difference between ancient and modern penguins, with Kumimanu fordycei being nearly three times heavier than today’s Emperor Penguin.
