Amid escalating conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran, social media platforms have been flooded with fake videos and misleading claims. India Today has fact-checked several viral posts. One widely shared video falsely claimed to show the coffin of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Iran. It actually showed the coffin of Sheikh Arkhan Hamid Mohan al-Karihala, chief of the Shivaliyat tribe in Iraq, who died on 2nd February. Another video claimed to show millions attending Khamenei’s funeral but was actually recorded at the Al-Qazimine Shrine in Qadimiyah, Baghdad, during commemoration for Imam Musa al-Qasim. A third video falsely claimed to show Iran’s attack on an Israeli nuclear plant; it actually depicted a military munitions depot exploding in Balkhliya, Ukraine, in 2017. Additionally, a video claiming to show Israel’s top religious leader’s death in an Iranian missile attack actually showed the funeral of Rabbi Bin Yamin Kanpil Makar, who died of illness in December 2025 at age 74.
