The BJP has been allocated 27 out of 234 seats in Tamil Nadu’s NDA seat-sharing arrangement for the 2026 elections, but questions have emerged over the distribution strategy. Despite the party achieving an 11 per cent vote share in 2024, it has been allocated only one seat in Chennai—Mylapore—in an urban pocket where it performed well. In Kanyakumari and Southern Tamil Nadu, the BJP has received four seats with large Christian populations, while easier seats like Kanyakumari itself were not allocated. In the Kongu belt, considered the BJP’s strongest region, the party has been given only one Coimbatore seat—Coimbatore North—and five others including Ooty and Tirupur. The biggest shock is the exclusion of Tirunelveli, a seat held by Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai Nayanar and contested by him for 25 years since 2021, forcing him to potentially change constituencies. The allocation has raised concerns about the BJP’s strategy and seat selection for the upcoming state elections.
