Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil has been arrested in connection with a third sexual assault case filed against him. He was taken into custody from a hotel in his constituency, Palakkad, in what a reporter on the scene described as ‘an unexpected move coming in from the police’. The arrest follows two previous cases in which he had secured bail. According to the report, the police acted quickly on the third complaint to prevent him from absconding as he had previously. While the Congress party expelled Mamkootathil following the initial allegations, he continues to serve as an MLA. The new complaint, like the earlier ones, is reportedly a case of ‘rape under the pretext of promiscuous marriage’.
