A special tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity, following a student-led uprising in 2024. The verdict has created a delicate diplomatic situation for India, where Ms. Hasina is currently in exile, as Bangladesh may seek her extradition under a bilateral treaty. In her first response, Sheikh Hasina stated, ‘Verdicts announced against me made by a rigged tribunal established and presided over by an unelected government with no democratic mandate…they are biased and politically motivated’.
