In this special report, India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Singh discusses the significant 15.27% hike in the national defence budget for 2026-27, which now stands at ₹7.85 lakh crore. Highlighting the focus on military readiness following ‘Operation Sindoor’, Singh notes, ‘Within this, the, what we call the modernization budget, which was about 1,48,000 crores last year is for the current year 1,85,000 crores, which is a jump of 24%.’ He details the government’s commitment to ‘Atmanirbharta’, stating that at least ₹1.39 lakh crore will be spent on domestic procurement to benefit the local ecosystem of PSUs and MSMEs. The conversation also covers the strategic allocation for the Sudarshan Chakra mission for multi-layered air defence, enhanced funding for border infrastructure along the LAC, and the ambitious ₹50,000 crore defence export target by 2030. Singh emphasises that the budget ensures India possesses military power commensurate with a $4 trillion economy.
