In a sharpening of rhetoric ahead of the elections in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) has vowed to launch an investigation into allegations that former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi was kept as a ‘prisoner’ by his son, M.K. Stalin. Addressing a campaign rally, EPS cited claims reportedly made by M.K. Alagiri and DMK MP A. Raja to question the circumstances surrounding Karunanidhi’s later years. ‘We will probe Kalaignar being kept as a prisoner if we win,’ Palaniswami declared, drawing a parallel to the DMK’s 2021 promise to investigate the death of J. Jayalalithaa. EPS further alleged that Karunanidhi did not fully trust Stalin, pointing out that he was appointed only as working president and not party president during his father’s lifetime. The AIADMK leader also accused Stalin of sidelining his brother Alagiri and sister Kanimozhi. The DMK has hit back, maintaining its stance on investigating Jayalalithaa’s death, as the political discourse in the state takes an increasingly personal turn.
