A significant public outcry has emerged following the relocation of Madhuri, a 36-year-old female elephant, from Nandini Mutt in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, to Gujarat’s Vantara facility. After over three decades at the mutt, Madhuri was shifted on court orders. The Maharashtra government and religious leaders are now seeking her return, terming it a matter of faith. Following a high-level meeting, the state government and Nandini Mutt of the Jain community have decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court. The Chief Minister assured the court of a dedicated team and proper care if the elephant is returned. This action follows a 45-kilometre silent march by over 10,000 people. Protesters claim the High Court ruling was based on a report by animal rights NGO PETA. PETA, conversely, states Madhuri is receiving deserved care at Vantara after years of being controlled by chains and forced into chaotic ceremonies.
