The Election Commission of India is scheduled to announce the poll schedule for assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry at 4 pm today. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar will brief the media on the exact poll dates and the number of phases in each state. The announcement is expected to formally kick off the political battle in these key states. West Bengal is likely to see a three-phase election, a reduction from the multi-phase polls held in 2021. Tamil Nadu and Kerala are also expected to see a shorter time frame between election day and verdict day compared to the 2021 polls. The Model Code of Conduct will come into force across all poll-bound regions once the announcement is made. The announcement has been delayed compared to 2021 due to the Summary Revision of Electoral Rolls exercise.
