A political confrontation is unfolding in West Bengal after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided political consultancy I-PAC and its head, Pratik Jain. The raids, conducted just two months before state assembly elections, are linked to a 2020 coal smuggling and money laundering case. The ED alleges that a hawala operator connected to the coal smuggling facilitated transactions worth crores of rupees to I-PAC. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intervened at the raid site, accusing the Union Home Minister of political intimidation and attempting to seize confidential party documents. The ED has since petitioned the Calcutta High Court, alleging Banerjee obstructed the investigation and removed evidence. In response, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and I-PAC have also approached the court, questioning the legality of the searches, with the TMC filing a counter-petition alleging trespass. Political analysts have questioned the timing of the probe.
