LIVE from Quito, Ecuador – Tensions erupt as Indigenous-led protesters clash violently with police amid the ongoing National Strike against President Daniel Noboa’s diesel subsidy cuts. Started on September 12, 2025, by CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador), the strike protests fuel price hikes from $1.80 to $2.80 per gallon, demanding economic reforms, release of detainees, and an end to repression. Today, October 12, crowds marched toward El Arbolito Park, burning tires and blocking roads, only to face tear gas, stun grenades, and baton charges from riot police. One Indigenous leader killed, over 100 injured, 80+ arrested (13 on terrorism charges), and states of emergency in 10 provinces. Amnesty International warns of excessive force, arbitrary detentions, and threats to judicial independence.
