This move is the first phase of a nationwide campaign set to cover 10 to 15 states, aimed at cleaning and updating the electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 assembly polls. The drive will initially exclude states with adverse winter weather. The Election Commission (EC) has also informed the Madras High Court that the revision will begin in Tamil Nadu next week to ensure the ‘purity of the electoral rolls is maintained’. The process in Bihar, which concluded on September 30, led to the removal of a significant number of names for reasons such as death or relocation, sparking political controversy.
