External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated that the West is letting down the Global South in increasingly uncertain times. He noted that developing countries face significant challenges, including the shocks of the COVID pandemic, conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, extreme climate events, trade volatility, and investment bottlenecks. This has led to a catastrophic slowing down of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) agenda. The minister said, "the rights and expectations of developing countries in the international system, which has been so assiduously developed over many, many decades are today under challenge." He pointed to the hypocrisy of the West, which sets different standards for itself while preaching to the Global South, adding that the existing world order has failed to meet the aspirations of developing nations.
