External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar addressed the United Nations’ 80th anniversary celebrations in New Delhi, highlighting India’s unwavering commitment to multilateralism and global peace. He critically assessed the UN’s current state, stating, ‘Its decision making neither reflects its membership nor addresses global priorities.’ Dr. Jaishankar expressed concern over the UN’s response to terrorism, questioning the credibility of multilateralism when a Security Council member protects organizations responsible for attacks like Pahalgam. The Minister also noted the increasing polarization of debates, visible gridlock, and financial constraints hindering meaningful reform. He emphasized the distress of the Global South, citing the slowing SDG Agenda 2030 as a significant metric. The event also marked the release of a commemorative postage stamp celebrating UN at 80, designed through a MyGov portal competition. India’s support for peacekeeping and its recent hosting of a Chiefs of Army Staff Conclave were also mentioned.
