Dr. Melani McAlister, director of the Institute for Middle East Studies at George Washington University, discussed the United States-Iran conflict and President Trump’s announcement of a pause for talks. She explained that Trump’s goal should be to leave the war and declare victory as soon as possible, as the war is extremely unpopular in the United States, particularly among his base. McAllister noted that Iran holds a critical lever by controlling the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20 per cent of global oil flows, giving Iran leverage despite few other advantages. She said Iran has raised the cost of this war in ways the Trump administration and Israel had not planned for, refusing to capitulate even after assassinations of top leaders. McAlister emphasized that the United States made the decision to go to war, not Israel, and must take responsibility. She added that Gulf countries may now question the value of their alliance with the United States after being targeted.
