In an interview, Dr. Makram Khoury-Machul, Founder and Director of the Cambridge Center for Palestine Studies, discussed the escalating tensions in West Asia. He argued that Donald Trump’s policies represent ‘transactional imperialism,’ comparing them to colonial-era practices. Dr. Khoury-Machul stated, ‘Iran since the Iran-Iraq war never ever attacked any other country or any neighbor whatsoever,’ asserting that Iran has been defending Palestinians against Israeli aggression. He defended Iran’s targeting of US military bases in the Gulf, saying Tehran warned neighbouring regimes that these installations support Israeli operations. Dr. Khoury-Machul, an Arab-Palestinian-Christian-British scholar with 25 years of experience at Israeli universities, contended that Israel seeks to eliminate Palestinian support networks. He suggested that a nuclearized Iran could restore regional order, despite acknowledging his general opposition to nuclear armament. He argued the root cause of regional instability remains the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.
