In an interview with India Today, Dr. Datesh Parulkar, an international expert from Goa University, discussed India’s energy security challenges amid the West Asia crisis. He revealed that India sources almost 50% of its oil and 54% of its LPG from the Strait of Hormuz region, along with significant sulfuric acid supplies used in nickel and cobalt processing. Dr. Parulkar emphasized that while a like-for-like replacement is not possible, India has been working on energy diversification, sourcing oil from 40 to 41 countries including Guyana, Venezuela, Nigeria, Angola and Russia. He highlighted that the Indian Navy is enhancing its presence in the Gulf of Oman and Gulf of Aden to escort vessels and deter hostile elements. Dr. Parulkar noted that approximately 20 Indian-flagged vessels remain stuck in the Strait of Hormuz. He also discussed alternative sourcing options through Saudi Arabia’s Yanbu facility and the importance of friend-shoring with stable partners like Morocco and Russia for fertilizers.
