As the West Asia conflict enters its second month, reports suggest President Donald Trump is considering a ground operation in Iran to extract 400 kilograms of enriched uranium, material Tehran could potentially use to build nuclear weapons. This comes even as regional talks aimed at de-escalating the conflict continue. Trump has also threatened Tehran, warning that the US would target all its oil wells and Kharg Island if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened. There are currently about 50,000 American troops in the Middle East, around 10,000 more than usual. Experts warn any attempt to seize Iran’s uranium will trigger retaliation, potentially extending the conflict by four to six weeks. The operation would be extremely difficult as extracting nuclear materials from fortified Iranian strongholds entails a complex, high-risk operation. Iran’s leadership says it is prepared to respond if US forces enter the battlefield. Talks, threats and truce all remain on the table, but the key question remains: what is America’s real goal, regime change or seizure of Iran’s uranium and oil?
