In a significant move following a Supreme Court ruling on trade authority, US President Donald Trump has announced a new 10% global tariff under Section 122. Speaking on the development, Trump stated, ‘Today, I will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122, over and above our normal tariffs already being charged.’ While expressing disappointment with the court’s overall decision, he argued that the ruling actually clarified and strengthened a president’s power to regulate trade. Trump specifically addressed the trade relationship with India, describing Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘great man’ and asserting that the current deal is ‘fair’ because India is now paying tariffs to the US. He further claimed that previous administrations allowed foreign countries to ‘rip off’ the United States, resulting in disgraceful deficits. The President confirmed that existing national security tariffs under Section 232 and Section 301 will remain in full force to protect American interests from unfair trading practices.
